Abstract

The present study aims is to evaluate by histomorphometric, imunoistochemical and microbiological analysis the effect of curcumin as photosensitizer and Light Emitting Diode (LED) for antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) as an periodontal treatment in induced periodontitis in rats. 96 animals are subjected to induction of periodontitis via installation of a cotton thread around the first molar on the left side, which is maintained for 7 days. The following animals will be randomly divided into 4 groups, which will receive the following local treatments: G1 (n=24) - no treatment; G2 (n=24) - irrigation with curcumin (40µM); G3 (n=24) - irradiation with Light Emitting Diode (LED); G4 (n=24) - irrigation with curcumin and irradiation with LED (aPDT). The LED that will be used in this study is a semicondutor (INGaN) with wavelenght of 465 to 485 nm and with irradiance of 600mW/cm2. The LED will be applied 60 seconds after application of the solution of curcumin on the buccal aspect of the mandibular first molars on the left side for 60 seconds. Eight animals in each group will be euthanized at 7, 15 and 30 days. Specimens will be processed to make the histomorphometric and immunohistochemical analysis. Microbiological samples will be taken from diseased sites immediately before treatment (baseline) and at 7, 15 and 30days after treatment. The results will be analyzed with the statistical analysis significance level of 5%. (AU)
