In the neuroendocrine control of the ovulatory cycle is very well known that the LH surge is an event that occurs at specific time of the day. The preovulatory LH surge is initiated on the day of proestrus when estrogen levels are high. Several evidences implicate that environmental clues in association to estrogen levels are responsible for the synchronization of the ovulatory cycle. However it is still a mystery how such kind of information can be integrated. It has been previous suggested that Kiss1 neurons from AVPV has intricate connections with the SCN and would be consider the intermediate pathway through which SCN inputs modulates GnRH activity. Photoperiodic clues have also been related to the neuroendocrine control of reproduction. In seasonal animals the increased melatonin secretion during winter are responsible to block reproductive functions that is follow by a decreased pattern of Kiss1 mRNA expression. It is not known how circadian clues can regulate the LH surge but evidences point out Kiss1 neurons as the main pathway responsible to modulate the GnRH neurons activity. The present investigation will employ electrophysiological and neuroanatomical tools to test the hypothesis that Kiss1 neurons are the main pathway through which circadian information could gain direct access to regulate the ovulatory cycle. Defining if Kiss1 neurons are part of the neural pathways by which circadian clues can modulate the ovulatory cycle offers a model for understanding how circadian information affect the reproductive system.
