Improvement on institutional infrastructure for research at FEC-UNICAMP – year of 2010, 2011 and 2012

Abstract

This project aims to seek an extension of the FEC's Information Technology resources to support research being developed at various levels in the College, through improvement in infrastructure wireless networks, computers and servers. With the growth of hardware and software tools and dependence on information technology, scientific research has expanded the scope and intensity, featuring high dependence on IT. In the case of FEC, research community is quite significant (73 members of the Faculty, 22 postdoctoral researchers, 411 graduate students and 650 undergraduates, and even visitors), with significant demand for classic computational processes and modern Internet communications, particularly wireless capabilities. The FEC's buildings are all connected through the wired network, but except for the main building, other buildings do not have computer labs with access to computers for all users. The proposed installation of wireless network in the building called “blue building" and laboratories will enable the integration of users in this research environment, using their personal computers or portable devices. The network servers responsible for email service and website need to be upgraded to more powerful machines and more disk capacity and memory. These machines, running UNIX, will be responsible for controlling user access, electronic mail, anti-spam and anti-virus and webmail for the users. The goal is to optimize the performance of services and ensure uninterrupted operation with the implementation of RAIO 5, increasing the storage capacity of data. Finally, the acquisition of computers (21) aims to provide room 11 as a room dedicated to researcher. (AU)
