Morphophysiological characterization of the prostate of adults and senile gerbils exposed to ethinylestradiol during neonatal period

Abstract

The prostate is an accessory gland of male genital system responsible for producing an alkaline liquid that ensure capacitation and survival of spermatozoa. Its development occurs under the influence of an androgenic and estrogenic control regulated and precise, so that interference sensitive in gland may predispose to develop diseases such as benign prostatic hyperplasia and cancer during adulthood and senile. Exposure to synthetic estrogens during embryonic and neonatal periods has been associated with permanent morphophysiological disorders in various organs of the male genital system. Epidemiological studies indicate that men who were exposed to estrogens and related-estrogens hormones during embryonic and neonatal periods showed greater probability of occurrence of infertility and testicular cancer and prostate cancer. At present it is not possible to ascertain whether exist intrinsic factors that may predispose the development of the prostate gland to cancer with age. However, as early exposure to steroid hormones can permanently alter various reproductive organs, it is questionable whether these agents can also interfere with the structure and physiology of the prostate. Based on these reports, the aim of this study is to evaluate if neonatal exposure to endocrine disruptor ethinylestradiol morphophysiological can cause alterations in the prostate during the gerbil adult and senile stages. For this, serological, morphological, morphometric-stereological, ultrastructural and immunocytochemistry analyzes will be performed. From the results obtained, it will be possible to assess whether early exposure to endocrine disrupters may favor the appearance of prostatic lesions throughout life. (AU)
