Study of symmetries in non-minimal Higgs sectors

Abstract

ATLAS and CMS collaboration recently reported discovery of a resonance at 125 GeV which resembles the long sought Higgs boson. The first measurements of its properties show intriguing deviations from the Standard Model expectations, and it is clear that standard vs. non-standard Higgs boson will be one of the hottest issues in particle physics in the next few years. Dr. Igor Ivanov, the candidate for Visiting Researcher (VR), has been working actively in the problem of classifying symmetries in extended Higgs sectors. This topic is also of great interest in models that tackles the flavor problem through the discrete flavor symmetries. This kind of approach has been extensively used to explain the peculiar mixing structure of neutrinos, consisting of two large angles and a small one which was confirmed this year to be nonzero. The VR will contribute enormously to the development of the "Jovem Pesquisador" (Young Researcher) project, to which this proposal is attached. The VR will participate in the project primarily through direct collaboration with the main researcher developing the plan of research detailed in the proposal. Such a research has a more focused character due to the duration of the visit (25days) but it fits in one topic of the original project. (AU)
