Preparation of oriented single crystals for studies on electronic, magnetic and thermal anisotropies

Abstract

This project aims to expand the capacity of the research team I lead, the Quantum Materials Group (GMQ), to include the preparation of singlecrystalline samples of intermetallic systems involving air- or moisture-sensitive reagents (K, Ba, Sr, La, Ce, I, etc.), and measuring the anisotropy of their electronic, magnetic and thermal properties, allowing us to operate at the forefront of the design, discovery and development of novel advanced and complex materials within the three main lines of experimental research being undertaken by GMQ, namely: (1) Magnetic Materials and Strongly Correlated Electrons, (2) Superconducting Materials: Mechanisms and Applications, (3) Thermoelectric Materials: Mechanisms and Applications.The main activities proposed include: the manipulation of the reagents in a new glovebox with automatic argon atmosphere control; the doubling of our rate of growth of world-class single crystals with a new box furnace, the orientation of the grown crystals using the x-ray diffractometers at the UFABC Multiuser Experimental Central; the cutting and polishing of oriented crystals in the formats demanded by several experiments using a new set of specialized saws and polishers, and the characterization of electronic, magnetic and thermal anisotropies (dependence on the crystal orientation) of cut samples using the various multi-user equipment at UFABC. For experimental techniques not yet available at UFABC, we resort to the extensive range of established collaborations with some of the leading specialist research groups in the world, fostering regular exchanges of samples, researchers and students.
