Dendritic spines in the posterodorsal medial amygdala of rats: morphology and connectivity

The posterodorsal medial amygdala (MePD) modulates different social behaviors and displays notable sexual dimorphism and plasticity in rats. It is not known the presence of receptors in differently shaped dendritic spine, that could provide insights about the synaptic organization of the MePD and the activity of local neurons. LIM homeobox (Lhx) transcription factors may be involved in the control of differentiation and development of neural cells.The aim of the present study is to describe the presence of the imunolabeling for the subunit GluR1 of the glutamatergic AMPA receptors and the GABAA receptors in the dendritic spines of MePD in adult male rats and identify neuronal subpopulations (LHX6+ and LHX9+ neurons) in male rats to know their possible functionality and connectivity. After the antibody incubation for the receptors and the transcription factors on the MePD slices, fine powdered carbocyanine dye DiI will be applied on the MePD. The resulting data should contribute to the knowledge of some forms of synaptic plasticity and the cellular basis of the functional organization of this amygdaloid region. (AU)
