Beef and dairy cattle supplementation in tropical pasture

Abstract

The objective of this project is to assess the effects of energy supplementation on cattle performance and metabolic variables. This project is divided in two parts with dairy cows and beef cattle supplementation. Three experiments will be conducted in dairy cows (performance and metabolism study), whose focus is the dairy cows in early lactation grazing tropical pasture and supplemented with protected fat. These studies have the purpose to evaluated protected fat sources, doses of fat and fat supplementation associated with corn processing. Milk yield, milk composition, fatty acid profile, pasture intake, total intake, microbial protein, blood variables, ruminal variables and kinetics variables (cannulated cows), mammary gland gene expression, morphological and chemical characterization of pasture, body weight, body condition score, energy balance, efficiency of livestock production. Beef cattle supplementation will evaluate the interaction between grazing management and energy supplementation and the association between levels and sources of the supplement in the rainy season on herbage intake, feeding behavior, ruminal, microbial and blood parameters of Nelore cattle. Seven experiments will be performed with rumen cannulated steers to determine the effects of doses of supplement and supplement source associated with the sward. Finally, all experiments with beef cattle and milk cows will be tested in the in vitro gas production. All data will be analyzed with the SAS statistical package. (AU)
