Abstract
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease. The incidence increased twice in the last decades, affecting 250 million people worldwide nowadays. The etiology is unknown, but genetic and environmental factors such as cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, reduced fish intake, obesity and stressful life events have been suggested. Methotrexate (MTX) is a folic acid antagonist widely used for the treatment of psoriasis. Folic acid supplement is used in the belief that it reduces adverse effects of MTX - hyperhomocysteinemia, sickness, alopecia, lack of appetite and elevated liver enzymes - however, few studies on folate status in the MTX use showed that supplement intake reduced therapeutic effect. Until the present study, no study was conducted after folic acid fortification. The aim of the present study is to investigate folate status prospectively before and after MTX and clinical status among patients diagnosed with psoriasis attended in a teaching hospital in the ABC region close to São Paulo city.
