Prevalence of chronic autoimune thyroiditis in women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Abstract

The polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a disease that affects approximately 7% of women of reproductive age. It is associated with several metabolic disorders, including insulin resistance (IR) and metabolic syndrome (MS). Insulin resistance is closely related to thyroid dysfunction (subclinical and clinical hypothyroidism). Recently, some studies show the relationship between PCOS and thyroid disorders and indicate a higher incidence of chronic autoimmune thyroiditis in PCOS women. However, these studies are still scarce. This project aims to assess the prevalence of chronic autoimmune thyroiditis in patients with PCOS, their equivalence ultrasound and to compare these findings in women with and without PCOS. Subjects and methods: there will be a cross-sectional study with clinical assessment, data collection charts, collection of blood tests, thyroid ultrasound assessment of patients attending the endocrine clinic of gynecology and family planning in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculdade de Ciências Médicas, Universidade Estadual de Campinas. These data will be transferred to their own records collection of the study. Statistical analysis: the sample size was calculated in 130 subjects. Statistical will be made by simple prevalence and odds ratio to compare them. To compare the serum levels of TSH to the findings of antithyroid antibodies and thyroid ultrasonographic changes, we will use the Student t test or the Kruskal-Wallis test, after aplly Shapiro´s test (to determine if the date are parametric or not).
