Biological and molecular characterization of dengue isolates, serotypes 1 and 2, in São José do Rio Preto city, SP, detected during 2006 to 2014 seasons

Abstract

Dengue is an acute fever disease of viral source and one of the most important arboviruses diseases on world. The virus belongs to the Flavivirus genus (Flaviviridae family) and has four antigenically distinct serotypes. All serotypes are transmitted by mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti) and they are endemic to tropical and subtropical regions. It is a global public health problem whose eradication is directly related to the control of its vector. The serotypes are classified into genotypes with different degrees of virulence. Within genotypes there are multiple genetic lineages. The displacement of these serotypes has a complex dynamic in the human beings and during the displacement of one serotype for long periods it disappears due to the development of immunity in the population, tendentially. Several factors influence the spread or the deletion of a genotype and /or strain on population. This work will evaluate the biological characteristics such as virulence, replication, and growth of isolates of São Jose do Rio Preto circulating in the years 2006 to 2013, comparing it with the genetic characteristics of each isolate.
