Abstract

Professor Ian James Norman has been a member of the educational group at the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery, Kings College London; between 1997 and 2006 he served as a teacher of Nursing and Interdisciplinary Care, and ever since has been serving as Associate Professor at the school management. He has been developing researches in two lines: Workforce and Education in Health and Nursing, and has been producing works on the initiatives implemented for improvement of healthcare services and their results for patients and workers. Within these lines of investigation Professor Norman has special interest and academic experience in the theme of "Inter-professional Practice and Education", therefore justifying the present proposal of exchange, in order to deepen the knowledge on the theme as well as strengthen our partnership for the joint development of research and human resources formation, especially with graduation students. Professor Ian James Norman also is experienced in working with editorial boards of international scientific publications. Since 2005, he has been Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Nursing Studies journal, and between 2002 and 2005 he was their Editor Assistant. It is worth mentioning that Professor Ian James Norman was supervisor of the postdoctoral program carried out by Professor Dr Marina Peduzzi from the Departamento de Orientação Profissional da Escola de Enfermagem da Universidade de São Paulo, at the King's College London, from 09/01/2010 to 02/28/2011. The postdoctoral program have had the general objective of consolidating knowledge on the theme "inter-professional education on health and nursing" and the specific objective of doing the transcultural adaptation of a questionnaire written in English language and used in researches developed in England with the participation of the mentioned Professor. The postdoctoral research will be continued with the validation of the instrument adapted to the Portuguese language in the Brazilian context. The postdoctoral studies were carried out under a grant from the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq (process 2005 34/2010-6) and the study has been developed under a grant for research from the Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (process 2010/03107-2).The theme "Inter-professional Practice and Education" has been under debate for decades on the health and nursing area, and, since 2010, has been standing out in the international scenery due to it acknowledged contribution to increase the health service solvability and the quality of health care. Such highlight can especially be observed from the publication of the document 'Framework for action on interprofessional education & collaborative practice' from the World Health Organization (WHO, 2010) and of the Dossier The Lancet 'Health professionals for a new century: transforming education to strengthen health systems in an interdependent world (Frenk et al, 2010). The interprofessional education, such as it has been treated on the international literature, has been introduced in Brazil only recently, and demands strengthening through teaching and research activities.
