Smart materials application for wing Morphing based aeroelastic control

Abstract

The proposed visit of Prof. Karpel, who intends to fulfill part of his sabbatical at the Instituto Tecnologico de Aeronautica - ITA is to contribute to the research on control of aeroelastic systems using smart materials. This research project is part of the National Institute of Science and Technology - Smart Structures in Engineering, in which the ITA is responsible for The Subproject 8.6 - Applications of Smart Materials Control in aeroelasticity. Prof. Karpel was invited and attended the First Workshop on Aeroelasticity in the ITA in July 2010 (www.mec.ita.br/workshop2010) with the idea of establishing a work plan for 2011 predicting the development of work in control systems aeroelastic employing smart composite active fibers (AFC / MFC). The modeling and construction of systems employing such materials is under development through the guidance of an academic Master Thesis, as a continuation of a graduate work developed at ENCICA - France. The MFC was applied for the vibration control of plates. In the current work metallic material plate should be controlled when subjected to an aerodynamic flow, characterizing an aeroservoelastic system. Prof. Karpel is a pioneer in the field of aeroservoelasticity, being the creator of many current methods for state space aeroelastic systemas modeling. Began work in this area in the 80's during his doctorate at Stanford. He is currently developing lines of research in modeling nonlinear aeroservoelastic systems, a need current research lines developed at ITA. (AU)
