Abstract

Professor Selwyn A. Headley, an excellent pathologist with numerous international publications and significant scientific activity has been collaborating with the research group that is being coordinated by Prof. Enrico Ortolani. This collaboration started with a research project (# 2005/03204-0) that was supported by FAPESP and ended in November, 2007, where Dr. Headley was responsible for all histopathological evaluations done during that study, and where he actively participated in the elaboration of the related scientific manuscript. Dr. Headley's collaborations have resulted in five published manuscripts in veterinary medicine Journals of high scientific impact: two locally and three in international Journals with good impact factors. These manuscripts were published between 2007 and 2010, and in all of these, the financial support of FAPESP was acknowledged. After this rewarding initial participation, Dr. Headley was invited to be collaborative researcher in two additional projects; both of these received financial support from FAPESP. The experimental phase of one of these projects is already completed (process FAPESP # 2007/07240-6), while the other is being implemented (process FAPESP # 2009/15629-6). Both of these projects are directly related to the line of research involving intoxication of cupric compounds in ruminants, where the metabolism of cupper relative to other mineral elements and the additives used during animal nutrition are being evaluated projects. Further, the predisposition of sheep to copper toxicosis is being evaluated and the implementation and establishment of prophylactic measures against this disease, which significantly affects the local sheep producing industry. Consequently, in order to consolidate the integration of this important researcher, Prof. Selwyn A. Headley, with other members and participants of the research group headed by Prof. Enrico Ortolani, I hereby solicit this visiting researcher fellowship so that Prof. Selwyn A. Headley can be maintained in Brazil. During his stay, he will perform the last round of analyses and disseminate new fixation methods and histological techniques associated with the current ongoing research project (2007/07240-6) that is supported by FAPESP. The activities to be done by the visiting researcher will be given in detail within the following work-plan. (AU)
