Continuation and increment of the collaboration between Brasil and Canada: advancing research and improving education and nursing assistance in neonatal and pediatric pain and stress management

Abstract

The proposal elaborated for the visit of Dr. Fay Warnock includes activities directed to teaching and research in Pediatric and Neonatal Nursing. This visit is related to a continuation of an academic interchange between researchers of the Research Group in Nursing on Child and Adolescent Health Care (GPECCA), from the School of Nursing at the University of Sao Paulo (EERP-USP), and Canadian researchers initiated in 1977. Our research group has received visitors from the University of British Columbia School of Nursing, Vancouver-BC, in different periods. In 1988 and 2003, we had the visit of Dr. Virginia Ellen Hayes (FAPESP protocol n.98/00513-6), and in 2006, Dr. Fay Warnock (FAPESP protocol n. 2003/07310-3). GPECCA researchers also visited UBC in 1999, 2002 and 2006. In 2008/2009, Thaila Correa Castral, a doctoral student of the Graduate Program in Public Health Nursing from EERP-USP did her training under the supervision of Dr. Warnock (CNPq protocol n. 200113/2008-9), which is also her co-supervisor for the project entitled "Maternal factors related to pain and stress response in preterm newborns while in maternal kangaroo care" (FAPESP protocol n. 2007/05051-1). All these activities focused on Nursing and family of children with chronic diseases (Dr. Hayes) and neonatal pain management (Dr. Warnock). The present proposal aims to continue the collaboration with Dr. Warnock but also to expand and increment the exchange between GPECCA researchers and research centers in Canada. Dr. Warnock has worked with the development of new measurement instruments to generate time-based data related to neonatal pain and stress behavior and behavior and interaction of mothers with anxiety and depression with their children in a pain situation. The visitor has great experience in systematic observation and mycroanalitical coding, introducing innovative methods in nursing research. Among the activities planned to Dr. Warnock´s visit are to: offer a course; to participate as a speaker in a symposium and a round table; be a committee member in Thaila Castral PhD defense; visit neonatal units, pediatric awards and rooming-in units; participate in meetings to discuss ongoing collaborative project, including a Young Investigator fellowship project in preparation to be submitted to FAPESP), and other future collaborative projects; collaborate in a graduate course and GPECCA technical-scientific meetings; give consultation to research projects in development by GPECCA; participate in peer-reviewed papers preparation and to discuss and plan the training of graduate students to her lab at UBC. Expected results of this visit are to: continue exchange between centers; bring theoretical and methodological foundation to research, teaching and nursing assistance; and develop collaborative projects on neonatal pain and stress and developmental care with maternal participation. All these benefits meet with the priority of internationalization of Graduate Programs and Brazilian Neonatal and Pediatric Nursing. (AU)
