Study of properties of Bose-Einstein condensates: dipolar atoms

Abstract

We study the ground state properties of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates by analyzing the mean-field nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equation using variational solution as well as numerical simulation. In particular, we explore the stability properties of dipolar condensates with respect to contact and dipolar interactions for different trap geometries. We bring out new interesting structures and the dynamics exhibited by dipolar condensates from numerical simulation. Further, we consider the study of the Anderson localization of dipolar condensates in bichromatic optical lattice (BOL) and random potentials. By numerical simulation and variational analysis of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation we study the localization of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (DBEC) of $^{52}$Cr atoms in a three-dimensional BOL. We compute the phase diagram relating the atomic scattering lengths and the intensity of optical lattice potentials in different directions. (AU)
