Positive and negative effect of macrophytes in aquaculture

Current project is a complementary study on the positive and negative effects of water plants, normally extant in aquaculture ponds, in fish-breeding systems. The negative effect is related to the invasion of plants on the fish-breeding pond's water surface covered with the macrophyte Salvinia auriculata Aublet. The effect of such macrophyte covering is evaluated by water quality and, consequently, by fish production. Another section of the study deals with the positive effect in the use of macrophytes in environmental recovery and in the laboratory production of algae. A rational management decreases disturbances in fish-breeding tanks by means of biological treatments such as periphyton and macrophytes. They are primary producing components featuring growth that depends on the nutrients retrieved from water through the absorption of substances in the environment for their metabolism. Another rational way in the use of macrophytes, specifically Eichhornia crassipes, is its use to lower costs in the laboratory production of alga culture as a culture medium for Haematococcus pluvialis and Ankistrodesmus gracilis, two Chlorophyceae algae species, and their effect on the growth and production of lipids for possible employment in aquaculture or industrial production. Long-term studies (FAPESP 2006/50315-4; 2008/56621-5) have already been undertaken. They aimed at analyzing macrophytes in environmental recovering, important tools to know the structure and the behavior of the biotic and abiotic components of the region under analysis. Current project will be a continuation of other studies (FAPESP - 93/0994-0; 97/5163-0; 2003/2004 CRSP (USA); 2007/54769-2; 2009/51852; 2009/51946-6; 2010/50478-6) which are being undertaken in our laboratory. Results may provide adequate practices for management without any negative effects and a rational use of these plants as a positive effect within fish-breeding activities. They may also be useful for the production of prime matter such as natural feed for fish or in the commercial industry. (AU)
