Superficial and ground waters constitute the main sources for water supply. Hydrogeochemistry relates the chemical composition of natural waters to their environment and depends on complex processes that include the interaction of water with minerals/rocks, atmosphere and biosphere. Mostly, the chemical characterization of waters is restricted to the main dissolved constituents and some of the commonest trace elements. The lanthanides (Ln) are not commonly measured in waters and processes of their hydrogeochemical fractionation are not fully understood yet. Despite that, anthropic anomalies of gadolinium and lanthanum in waters are being reported. The main objectives of this research are 1) to characterize the hydrogeochemistry of rivers waters of the region of Campinas (SP, Brazil) and establish the concentrations of "dissolved" lanthanides and their fractionation in the waters samples; 2) to quantify and map the presence of anthropogenic anomalies of La e Gd in the rivers waters; 3) to characterize the hydrochemistry of groundwater sampled from supply wells of UNICAMP campus in Campinas, to establish the influence of the different aquifers in the hydrochemistry as a whole, as well as in the distribution, fractionation and speciation of lanthanides in those waters; 4) to improve the method based on ICP-MS measurements used for the determination of lanthanides in waters samples, to diminish the detection limits. The results will be useful to know characterize and understand the distribution and fractionation of lanthanides in the waters under study. The methodology will be useful for future larger scale studies. (AU)
