Digital techniques for quick survey of natural factors in environmental degradation processes and associated hazards

Abstract

The importance of environmental conditions to regional and urban planning has it is importance accepted in technical and scientific discussion all around the world, and is considered in Brazilian policies for urban management. Despite it, natural limitations inconsideration is common in most of Brazilian districts and cities planning and construction activities, causing significant environmental degradation and natural disasters with high social and financial costs. Engineering geological mapping is recognized as a good tool in providing data for planners, but mapping costs can be a serious restriction for its application in the majority of Brazilian cities. Terrain evaluation is a proper technique for natural environment characterization for Engineering geological mapping activities, but sometimes the costs of producing the information for its application can be a problem. In order to contribute for solving this problem is proposed this Project, whose presents the main scope for develop a methodological proposition and apply it for characterizes natural potentialities and constrains for regional and urban planning using terrain evaluation based on free information and using digital cartography. The Project considers the usage of TOPODATA Project data and the application of ARCHYDRO tools and using IDRISI and ARCGIS Geographical Information Systems. The main results from the Project will be its application in Ilha Solteira district, the development of a methodology for quick and low cost environment characterization for districts planning and a set of orientations for databank structure for this finality.
