Abstract

The predict equations to determine normal values in the population must be developed which will be applied to the variable in question. The evaluation of respiratory muscle strength is widely used in pediatric intensive care since, determining chance for success or failure of extubation, and the monitoring of outpatients with neuromuscular diseases and respiratory diseases, favoring the intervention. Currently, Brazilian studies using maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximal expiratory pressure (MEP) as the outcome, do so in absolute values or predicted values according to the equations described for other population. Thus, there is the risk to underestimate or overestimate the observed values. Objective: To determine the reference values of MIP and MEP, and describe predict equation that finds the value for normal pediatric population. Method: There will be a cross-sectional study in healthy subjects from four high schools chosen randomly in the city of São Paulo-SP. Will be evaluated respiratory muscle strength (MIP, MEP) in a noninvasive manner by the manometer. For these measurements the individual will do expiration or inspiration in the equipment that measures the strength. It will also be performed lung function test to determine the normality of respiratory system. The body mass index, weight, height, age and pubertal stage will also be evaluated to determine variables that may compose the predict equation of MIP and MEP. The body mass index and pubertal stage were included in this project because there are reports in the literature of these variables can influence the values in question. (AU)
