Abstract

There several studies concerning osteosynthesis of mandibular angle fractures with conventional straight or curved plates. However, few studies deal with grid plates. The geometry of such plates allows to use increased number of screws, three-dimensional stability, torque resistance, malleability and low-profile. This study will evaluate the use of grid plates for internal stable fixation of mandibular angle fractures. Polyurethane replicas of human mandibles simulating simple angle fractures will be used as substratum for mechanical testing. Fixation will be performed with four-hole or eight-hole 2.0mm system grid plates, or one four-hole 2.0mm system straight plate, as described by Champy in 1978. Mechanical testing will be performed with an universal essay servohydraulic machine (EMIC). Axial loads will be applied on the fixates hemimandibles. Results will be tabulated and statistically analyzed for comparison of the fixation methods studied. (AU)
