Long term (1969-2003) fluctuations on structure and abundance of gelatinous zooplankton (Cnidaria and Thaliacea) on South Brazilian Bight

Abstract

The gelatinous zooplankton (Cnidaria, Ctenophora and Thaliacea) is an important and frequently neglected component of pelagic ecosystems worldwide. Nowadays, there is a concern about excessive increases in populations of gelatinous zooplankton in marine environments due to the degradation of fish stocks or to the oceanographic anomalies such as El Niño-La Niña. However, in most cases information on "normal" abundance of the species is very limited to support such perceptions, especially considering small species like most cnidarians and several thaliaceans. Long-term monitoring with large spatial scales is one possible way to test if such changes are actually occurring. The suggestion of the present project is to analyze zooplankton samples from historical summer cruises (1969-2003) held at Instituto Oceanográfico da Universidade de São Paulo in order to verify if such population increases are indeed happening at South Brazilian Bight (SBB). Two complementary approaches will be undertaken: i)analysis of representative summer cruises of the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s covering broad spatial sampling over SBB; ii)analysis from a specific sector near the 100 m isobaths off the State of São Paulo, based on plankton samples from all summer cruises available between 1969 and 2003. This sampling strategy, with wide geographic coverage and long-term sampling, allows detecting whether the gelatinous populations from SBB are increasing or not. In addition, the analysis of such vast material will also allow a robust inventory of these groups, contributing to a better understanding of zooplankton diversity at SBB. The project aims to i) increase knowledge on the diversity of gelatinous plankton in the area; ii) contribute to the understanding of the structure of pelagic systems of SBB; iii) understand the relationship between the distribution and abundance of key species of gelatinous plankton with the main oceanographic processes and, iv) test whether in fact there is a tendency for population increases and changes in community structure in the region as a function of fishing pressure in recent decades and/or oceanographic anomalies arising from global-scale climate processes (e.g. El Niño-La Niña).
