Abstract

There are evidences that support genetic susceptibility to obesity. Susceptibility is affected by lifestyle-related environmental factors, making the control of the disease challenging and complex. In severe obesity, surgery promotes weight loss and controls comorbidities, but the results of this procedure vary from patient to patient and little is known about the interaction between the genetic modulation of the results and food intake. Hence, the objective of the present study is to investigate if single-nucleotide polymorphisms (UCP2, UCP3, LPL, LIPC, APO A-1, APO E-2, APO E-4, LEPR, GHRL, GHSR, 5HT2C, LEP, FTO) affect the food and nutrient intakes, body weight and comorbidities of obese women before and 12 months after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). This will be a prospective study with 300 women. The study is part of a larger project where DNA samples have already been collected from the study population and three of the selected genes have already been genotyped. The knowledge produced by the study may help to establish strategies capable of predicting and monitoring surgery results. These results are of special interest to Brazil since the amount of information on the effects of bariatric surgery available in the country is still insufficient and bariatric surgery is provided by the public health system.
