Syntheses, characterization and photophysical investigation of rhenium (I) complexes

The use of coordination compounds in photosensors design offers a vast application, from small molecules probes to biomolecules probes, such as proteins and DNA. In particular, the emissive property of rhenium(I) polypyridyl complexes, fac-[Re(CO)3(NN)L]n (n = 0 or +1), is generally ascribed to the 3MLCT excited state, which can be modulated by changing the polypyridine ligand, NN, as well as the spectator ligand, L, and can be conveniently employed in the luminescent sensors development. The rhenium(I) complexes have several advantages over the organic compounds employed for the same purpose: 1) long emission lifetimes, which enhance the detection sensitivity in time-resolved techniques; 2) photostability; 3) emission-phosphorescence nature with large Stokes shift, which can minimize self-quenching; 4) environment-sensitive emission. Additionally, such complexes show good biocompatibility, being stable under physiological conditions and low toxicity, and exhibit high membrane permeability. This proposal aims to synthesize and characterize rhenium(I) compounds with different NN and/or L ligands as well as to investigate the photochemical and photophysical properties in order to rationalize the novel ligands effect on these properties. By this way, it will be possible to understand the behavior of ground and excited state in polar and non-polar solvents and modulate the complexes aiming to develop and/or improve the biomolecules photosensors.
