Phthalocyanines as photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy

Abstract

The main objective of this project is to obtain, characterize and assess the photochemical, photophysical and phototherapeutic properties of new phthalocyanines derivatives for use as photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy. The project proposes the synthesis and characterization of new symmetrical and asymmetrical phthalocyanines linked to different peripheral groups, such as carbohydrates and polyols, chiral compounds and substituents with positive and negative charges, always aiming to give the macrocycle a set of properties suitable for use in photodynamic therapy. It is expected that the presence of a combination of these peripheral groups around the phthalocyanines macrociclic may provide greater solubility in physiological media, decreased of aggregation process (due to the stereochemistry of the link), and also a greater interaction and selectivity to cancer cells, potentiating these new compounds for use as a photosensitizer.
