Determinants of obesity risk among school adolescents from survey with mixed sample

Obesity, sedentary behavior and the adoption of unhealthy food patterns are the main factors of morbidity and mortality among adolescents. It is known, however, that many of these risk factors can be prevented by actions that encourage and promote healthy behaviors among youth. Objective: To investigate the environmental and social determinants of obesity and weight gain among schoolchildren of Piracicaba, São Paulo. Methods: A probabilistic sample will be selected in multiple stages, covering municipal and adolescents is estimated at 2,000 from public and private schools in Piracicaba (SP). The sample will be drawn to include all schools visited in a survey in 2009. Will be assessed demographic data, socioeconomic, anthropometric (self-reported), food consumption, physical activity patterns and sexual maturation in electronic questionnaires. In a subsample, selected probabilistically, anthropometric data will be assessed to gauge the difference between measured and self-reported data, and evaluation of the biochemical profile of adolescents. Descriptive statistics (means and standard deviations) will be calculated and estimated the frequencies of the main anthropometric and behavioral indicators. The effects of environmental and social determinants of obesity will be estimated using linear mixed model. (AU)
