Abstract

There has been an increasing interest on the investigation of the influence of physical activity on bone metabolism and osteopenia. Efforts to reduce bone loss can be carried out with the use of calcium, drugs and hormones. However, regular physical activity can maintain or even to increase the bone mass. Objective: to analyze and to compare the effects of specific physical activities such as swimming, jumping and vibration on the prevention of bone loss caused by hypo activity. Method: young adult, female Wistar rats will be randomly allocated into eight groups. SUSP: animals suspended by the tail during three weeks; CONT-SUSP: animals kept in standard cages during three weeks, with no suspension; SUSP-NAT: animals suspended by the tail for three weeks but with discontinuation of suspension for swimming exercises; CONT-NAT; animal kept in suspension by the tail for three weeks, but removed from suspension the same time as the animals of the anterior group; SUSP-SALT: animals suspended by the tail for three weeks but with discontinuation of suspension for jumping exercises; CONT-SALT: animal kept in suspension by the tail but removed from it the same period of time of the animals as the anterior group; SUSP-VIBR: animals suspended by the tail for three weeks, but with discontinuation of suspension for vibrations exercises; CONT-VIBR: animal kept in suspension by the tail for three weeks, but removed from it the same period of time of the animals as the anterior group. At the end of each group, after euthanasia, the methods of assessment will be bone densitometry (DXA), bone mechanical testing, determination of blood biochemical indicators of bone metabolism and histomorphometric analysis.
