Dynamic characteristics of human eye for biometric applications

Abstract

The human eye is sensitive to visible light; the pupil dilates and contracts under the effect of light, and the IRIS and sclera reflect the light exceptionally. By using appropriate cameras, we can digitize the eye's image under near-infrared lighting, with no effect on the pupil movements. To capture an IRIS image avoiding the natural reflex on the surface of the eyeball from affecting the quality of the scanned image you can use the Consensual Reflex of the human eye.We have developed in our laboratory (LAVI), a prototype to capture images of the human eye using the Consensual Reflex allowing us to propose a new approach of IRIS biometrics. The assessed characteristics were called dynamic features. The results in the biometric identification of individuals showed that these features are discriminating and even using a simple similarity verification method it was obtained 99.10% of accuracy. Based on these results, this proposed research project aims to develop a more effective prototype for image capturing, aiming to study and to discover new dynamic features of the human eye, and new biometric algorithms for the recognition of people. Furthermore, the prototype optimization and the new features to be investigated may provide relevant data for analysis and measures of pupilary behavior targeting future applications on ophthalmology.
