Taxonomic studies of species of Meliaceae Juss. State of the Espírito Santo

Abstract

The state of Espírito Santo occupies an area of approximately 46,098.571 km² in southeast of Brazil, bordering the states of Bahia, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro, besides being bathed by the Atlantic Ocean to the east. In this state, two different morphoclimatic regions can be distinguished, the costal plain and the plateau in the central area of the state. Vegetation types are very diverse, including five formations: the pioneers (manguezais and restingas), tabuleiro forest, Atlantic Forest (submontana, montana and alto-montana), semidecidual seasonal forest (terras baixas, submontana and alto-montana) and ecological refuges (high fields). The present work refers to the taxonomic survey of the Meliaceae species in espírito Santo State. This family is comprised of approximately 50 genera and 600 species, widely distributed in tropics and subtropics regions. In Brazil occurs 9 genera and 82 species - estimative number. The preliminary survey indicates the existence of about 22 species of Meliaceae in Espírito Santo State. The present work will be based on bibliographic review, consults to herbaria, collections, photographic records, and fields observation. Descriptions, illustrations, geographical distribution maps and comments will be present about each species. (AU)
