Oral and gestural production during a naming task in children with Down Syndrome

Abstract

The gestures produced by children with Down syndrome (DS), on comparing to children with typical development (TD), are predominant over the words and they are used not just to give support for the oral communication. Their gestures last longer and their iconic gestures repertory is reduced. On pointing out the relation between gestures and language development and on comparing these data with other populations, the literature frequently reports researches of children up to 36 months old or not older than 48 months, but there are few studies that do this analysis from this age on. The objective of this study is to research the lexical production of 25 children with DS, aged between 4 and 9 years old, in the pre-operative level of cognitive development and oral communication as preferred mean of communication. The target of this research is to verify the role of the gestures in the process of language development. Twenty five children will be submitted to two naming tasks: vocabulary (ABFW) and actions (Verb Task). The kind of gestures and the combination modalities between gestures and oral expression will be analyzed and characterized. The tasks will be individually applied by the same therapist. They will be videotaped and transcribed in specific protocols. The agreement analysis will be conducted with 20% of the tasks, randomly selected. The data will be submitted to an appropriate statistical analysis. (AU)
