Catholic congregations, education and National State in Brazil

Abstract

This project deals with the immigration of religious congregations to Brazil in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. We examine the alliances, agreements and disputes that nurtured the displacement of European congregations to Brazil. We also examine European congregation’s relationships with Brazilian Catholic Church's project, the process of Romanization of the Church and the political projects of their own congregations in face of their internationalization. We analyze the effects of the arrival of religious congregations in Brazil at the time of the construction of the national educational system, the society's and the state's struggle for secularization and the configuration of modem cities. The project focus on education, understood as a process of socialization of newcomers - children and foreigners. Education that extends beyond the school, which also develops and is marked by urban life, city aesthetics and the objects of culture - buildings, books, business structures, the arts. We therefore pro pose to examine the social position of the Catholic congregations in order to problematize the issues traditionally found in the history of Brazilian education. We also assess the increased circulation of the European congregations in Brazil, and the creation of national congregations during the construction of the National State. The central question of this project how Catholic congregations, that spread throughout the country since the mid-nineteenth century, took part on the building of the National State. (AU)
