Abstract

For implant planning, CT offers several advantages over conventional radiography. However, it is still not widely used but in the post-operative assessment. The evaluation of peri-implant bone defects still raises many questions, especially related to interference from metallic artifacts caused by dental implants. The objectives of this study are to test the accuracy of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in the diagnosis of peri-implant bone defects, to compare different imaging protocols on two different cone-beam CT scanners to assess the interference caused by metallic artifacts visualization of dental implants in peri-implant bone integrity and influence of the variance of voxel thickness and FOV (field of view), specifically with i-CAT cone beam CT scanner.30 blocks fresh beef ribs will be used, in which 120 sites for implants will be made. Peri-implant bone defects will be simulated with perchloric acid in half of the sample and then the implants will be installed. The acquisitions will be held in two CBCT devices: a) Next Generation i-CAT and b) PreXion 3D in different acquisition protocols. Three observers will evaluate the tests twice, in random order in two independent workstations containing the software OsiriX MD, Xoran and PreXion 3D Viewer. Sensitivity, specificity and reproducibility of CBCT will be evaluated in all protocols. (AU)
