Dynamics of open quantum systems: quantum-classical transition and electromagnetically induced transparency in optical cavities

Abstract

With this project I hope to improve the infrastructure for the development of the researches that are in progress in our research group. In particular, I hope to provide computational support for my masters and doctoral students. The research proposed here can be divided into two themes: i) quantum-classical transition: we will investigate the limits of classicality for a cavity field and its dependence on the number of atoms, as well as we will investigate the phenomenon of bistability present in semi-classical models that describe the interaction between many atoms and a field subjected to an external linear pumping. We will also investigate how the super-strong coupling regime changes such limits of classicality; ii) electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) with few atoms: here we will investigate the phenomenon of EIT with few atoms in optical cavities, first investigating how to control the statistical properties of the field using EIT and then the differences between the quantum and semi-classical models for EIT in cavities. In the semi-classical model, valid when we have many atoms inside the cavity, we have a bistability which depends on the intensity of the control field, present in EIT experiments. Then we will investigate possible applications of this controllable bistability in the context of quantum information. (AU)
