Abstract

Will be evaluated sixty individuals with normal occlusion, and both genders aged 18 to 45 years old. All individuals will come from the clinic of Plastic Surgery, Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP). Individuals will be divided into two groups: Group 1 - 30 subjects with normal occlusion were male and Group 2 - 30 subjects with normal occlusion females. Individuals will be selected with at least 14 teeth in each jaw. Will be held photographs of the face in the standard frontal and lateral right and left, as well as intra oral pictures on standard front, side, right and left upper and lower occlusal, and lateral right and left protruding. The photos taken will be reviewed by a specialist orthodontist in order to show the normal occlusion. All patients should have the first molar in relation to Class I and at least four of the six keys Andrews. Will be excluded patients who experience pain, change in oral opening, clicks or crackles temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) and bruxism and dental restorations that alter the occlusion. Individuals with braces, or who have used braces for less than three years of evaluation. The evaluation of masticatory efficiency will be held with the chewing of 4 capsules with fuchsin granules inside an interval of 3 minutes between each capsule chewing. The dye extracted is quantified by spectrophotometry. The concentration of fuchsin allow the determination of masticatory efficiency. Analyses will be performed at the Laboratory of Pharmacokinetics, Faculdade de Ciências Farmacêuticas da USP de Ribeirão Preto. Individuals in groups I and II will be submitted to measure muscle strength using a digital dynamometer model IDDK (KRATOS-Industrial Equipments, Cotia, São Paulo, Brazil), with a capacity of 100kgf adapted for oral conditions. The force measurements are given in Newtons (N), and will be conducted in three steps left molars, three rights and three molars in the central incisors. In each region will be the arithmetical. The results of masticatory efficiency and muscle strength will be correlated and evaluated statistically. (AU)
