Detection of HPV by nPCR in oral leukoplakia: case-control study

Abstract

The oral leukoplakia is considered as a pre-malignant lesion for the development of the squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and several risk factors can be related to this carcinogenesis, including the human papilloma virus (HPV). HPV is the main cause of cervical cancer and its role in oral carcinogenesis is still controversial. In the oral mucosa has been made the association of oral leukoplakia with HPV. The aims of this study is to detect the presence of HPV DNA in fresh tissue samples, saliva, plasma and oral exfoliated cells extracted from patients with and without oral leukoplakia, analyzed through the technique of nested PCR (nPCR). For this study will be evaluated 30 patients with oral leukoplakia and 30 patients control patient. Will be performed the extraction of DNA of the samples, and then its amplification through PCR. After confirming the presence and integrity of DNA, will be held nPCR for detection of HPV. The results will be subjected to statistical analysis (chi-square or Fisher's exact test). (AU)
