Abstract

Stroke is a global health problem and leading cause of disability and mortality in adults, especially in developing countries as Brazil. This proposal aims to study the stroke epidemiology in a population of low socio-economic status from participants the EMMA Study (Study of Morbidity and Mortality of stroke) in the district of Butantan in São Paulo, based on the strategy of surveillance proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO). Methodology: baseline characteristics of this stroke surveillance project include hospital-based records of fatal and nonfatal events (STEP 1). In addition, all cases of stroke that are included in the study will be followed up to two years to verify the impact of risk factors in early and long-term lethality and influence on survival according to the main stroke subtypes hemorrhagic and ischemic). Expected results: to determine the characteristics of emergency care to enable proper orientation of the pre-hospital services and units isolated from emergency exists in the city; determine the distribution of the event by hour, day of week, month and season years to enable the planning of health care in the hospital network;evaluate the impact of cerebrovascular risk factors associated to in-hospital and post hospital discharge death rates and determine the case fatality rate and degree of disability from cerebrovascular disease subtype according with age and sex in a prospective follow-up of up to two years.
