Catalytic convertion of glycerol in liquid and vapor phase to products of higher commercial value


Due to the rising production of biodiesel in Brazil and worldwide, the search for alternatives to conversion of glycerol into higher value-added materials has become an increasingly important research area. These strategies include the convertion of glycerol into products with high commercial value by hydrogenolysis. This is a promising and economically viable alternative, since it makes use of a byproduct of biodiesel process. Glycerol is transformed into products with higher added value and versatility in industrial applications. Among the possibilities, 1,2-propanediol (propylene glycol) is one of the most used, due to that great commercial importance in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, polymers, plastics, etc., and also in the antifreeze production. Based on the literature and in previous studies made by our research group, we propose to use niobium, alumina and activated carbon as catalyst supports and Cu, Ni, Pt, Ru and Pd as active metals, in order to promote the hydrogenolysis of glycerol. We will evaluate the conversion of glycerol by using systems in liquid and vapor phase. It will be tested low cost catalysts such as Cu and Ni, for comparison with noble metals. (AU)
