Coupling agent effect on the environment properties of polymeric composites with lignocellulosic fibers

Abstract

Currently there is growing interest in polymer composites reinforced with lignocellulosic fibers to replace glass fibers because they are from renewable resources, are not abrasive to processing equipment and have low density compared to glass fibers. But the lignocellulosic fibers show early degradation temperature around 200 °C, limiting its use in polyolefins. Polyolefins have no functional groups to promote interactions at the interface of the fiber-matrix leading to a decrease in the performance of composites. It is necessary to use coupling agents which promote interactions at the interface fiber-matrix. A growing number of papers report the use of coupling agents in these composites with the aim of improving their properties. However, there are few reports of systematic studies about the influence of coupling agents on the stability of these composites. This project aims to study the stability of polyolefin/lignocellulosic fibers composites using coupling agents. For this propose the accelerated and environmental aging tests will be made. We will evaluate the effects of coupling agent and the degradation mechanisms through analysis of mechanical properties, thermal properties, morphology, colorimetric and spectroscopic measurements and accelerated hydrothermal aging measurement.
