The importance of the Project "Racism and Education: Educational Law number 10.639/2003 and Sao Paulo state schools" rests on the possibility of understanding how Black and White children learn African and Afro Brazilian History and in which ways this learning reflects on the relationships among themselves and with their teachers . The research will collect data among teachers, by questionnaires and interviews, as well as by means of direct observation on the daily activities at the chosen schools. Once all the data is collected it will be analyzed using appropriated theory. The main hypothesis is that racism prevents the full implementation of the law and consequently the teaching and learning of its contents. Therefore, it seems that further actions are necessary from the state government and the population as a whole in order to assure that this law is put into practice and thus can contribute to the decrease of inequalities that affect half of the Brazilian population.
