Biomedical applications of magnetic nanoparticles


This project aims the synthesis, characterization and biomedical applications of nanostructured systems. For this end, we intend to study the morphological, structural and magnetic properties of metallic nanoparticles synthesized by thermodecomposition of Fe, Au and Ni coordination compounds. The correlation between the synthesis parameters and the characteristics of the produced particles will serve as a quality control when compared to known samples in the literature and to evaluate their applicability in biomedicine.Among the biomedical applications we intended to infer the efficiency of the synthesized nanoparticles in the incorporation of stem cells, since they have the ability to differentiate all kinds of cells.The incorporated nanoparticles will be examined by means of their responses to the nuclear magnetic resonance imaging. The particles will be tested as drug carriers as a function of the interaction with biomolecules, such as bactericidal-like peptides, and will be applied to the photodynamic therapy, by means of interaction with photoactive and liberating NO molecules. The characterization of nanosystems obtained before and after the incorporation onto cells will be carried out with respect to the morphology, structure and magnetic properties by different techniques.
