In the last three decades the incidence of invasive fungal infections (IFI) has drastically rised. The genus Trichosporon is one of the most important causative agents of IFI in immunossupressed patients with invasive disposals. Advances in molecular biology produced chances in Trichosporon's taxonomy, and among 37 species, seven were linked to human infection: Trichosporon asahii, Trichosporon asteroides, Trichosporon cutaneum, Trichosporon inkin, Trichosporon mucoides, Trichosporon ovoides and Trichosporon loubieri. In case of persistant neutropenia, mortality of IFI by Trichosporon can reach 100%. Rapid identification of the causative agent could guide antifungal therapy and ameliorate patient's prognosis. Analysis of IFI caused by Trichosporon spp, with species identification by mass spectrometry MALDI-TOF is a novelty in Brazil, and will serve as a base for the implementation of this promising and fast technology for routine fungi identification in the Central Laboratory of HC-FMUSP. This study will be accomplished in collaboration with Laboratory INSERM/UPMC UMR S 945 of Hospital Pitié-Salpetrière in Paris. (AU)
