Using satellite data to determine the area of active fire and numerical modeling of the injection of trace gases and aerosols from the fire radiative energy approach

Abstract

The environmental degradation is an issue addressed at all scientific research levels. The changes in natural elements by exploitative practices related, in large part, to land use and land cover, causes significant changes in physical-chemical and biological properties of surface elements and in atmosphere composition. In this context, biomass burning acts as a modify factor of environment and plays a strategic role in global biogeochemical cycle. From chemical reaction that occurs in the combustion process, the organic compounds present in vegetation are returned to atmosphere and to soil in a cyclical behavior, influencing local and regional variables. Therefore, this project aims to create climatological maps of fire active area and its possible integration with the different orbital products, as well as modeling the injection of trace gases and aerosols from biomass burning and the relationship of fire fraction and fire radiative power (FRP) for South America. Consequently, estimates of active fire area, convective energy and trace gases and aerosols emissions from biomass burning will be assimilated in Brazilian Biomass Burning Emission Model (3BEM) that will provide the input data to the Coupled Chemistry-Aerosol Tracer Transport model coupled to Brazilian Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (CCATT-BRAMS). The performance of the simulations will be assessed through their comparison with data collected in the Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA) Smoke, Aerosols, Clouds, Rainfall, and Climate (SMOCC) and Radiation, Cloud, and Climate Interactions ( RaCCI).
