Evaluation of an artificial accelerated aging on the photocatalitical performance of self-cleaning bulding finishings

Abstract

The use of heterogeneous photocatalysis in building finishing materials has great potential to change the soiling deposition caused by mould growth and the deposition of particles pollution. As a consequence it can increase the overall building envelope performance, reducing the maintenance activities required and show a self depollution properties. However, the durability of photocatalytic processes requires further research, since reports of detachment of the semiconductor particles have been reported in the literature as a consequence of degradation of the bonding agent when you make a post treatment, and the process carbonation of the cement hydration products that have also caused a reduction in photocatalytic activity. Therefore, this proposal seeks to provide an important step in this direction, through an intensive program of accelerated aging, conducted in laboratory scale, using cicles of the UV radiation, infrared radiation and direct impact of rain directly on specimens treated with particles of anatase. The conclusion of the experimental program would answer whether there are significant differences between the of incorporation of anatase to building materials as a post-treatment with silicone-based repellents and a methyl silicate, and the incorporation dry materials during forming processes. The parameters for evaluation will be: The variation of contact angle, the degradation of organic staining agents and mapping of titanium dioxide in the SEM. (AU)
