This research project aims to develop innovative piezocomposite devices (or transducers) which essentially consists of multi-layer laminated structures and transducers based on the FGM (functionally graded material) concept focusing on nanopositioning and energy harvesting applications. The piezocomposite laminated transducers are composed of layers of piezoelectric material, metal and composite material (epoxy matrix with carbon or glass fibers). FGMs are materials whose properties and microstructure continuously change along a specific direction. The FGM transducers consist of a FGM metal frame coupled to a piezoceramic. The research comprises the design, simulation, fabrication (in meso-scale) and experimental characterization of these devices. The design of these devices is complex and can be obtained through the topology optimization method (TOM) that combines optimization algorithms and finite element for the design of parts with complex topology. In the case of laminated piezocomposite transducers the TOM formulation aims the quasi-static and dynamic design in order to simultaneously find the optimum location (topology) of materials in different layers, the piezoelectric material polarization sign and the fiber angle in composite layer. In the case of FGM piezoelectric transducers the MOT formulation aims the quasi-static design in order to find both its optimized topology and gradation. In both cases, the objective is to maximize displacements at specified points or energy conversion. (AU)
