Abstract

The inferior colliculus (IC) is primarily involved in auditory information processing but also integrates sensory information of aversive nature. It has been shown that the activation of the neural substrates of aversion of the IC by excitatory amino acids (EAA) causes freezing, escape behavior and immobility. Recently we demonstrated that an other kind of immobility, the catalepsy, can be influenced by the glutamatergic neural substract into the IC as the microinjection of glutamatergic antagonists (AP7 or MK-801) into this structure attenuates the haloperidol-induced catalepsy and the microinjection of glutamatergic agonist (NMDA) potentiates this catalepsy. However, how the IC influences this catalepsy is unclear. In this study it will be used the deep brain stimulation (DBS) method to examine the influence of the IC on the catalepsy induced by haloperidol. Considering that the electrodes used in the DBS method is able to stimulate and also recording the neural activity, it will be investigated if the glutamatergic neural substrate into the IC is able to influence the neural activity into the striatum, thalamus and substantia nigra.
