Purification, rheology, mineralogical characterization and modification of Brazilian clays for use in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and products of high added value

Abstract

Nowadays, when contemporary societies are turning to the need to preserve the planet by promoting demand for environmentally friendly products, clays stand out as natural and versatile products with a wide range of applications since ancient pottery to the modern nanotechnology area, and passing through areas such as construction, chemical, petrochemical, food, medicines, environmental preservation, drugs and cosmetics. Brazil is an important world supplier of raw clay (bentonite and kaolin). However, for the technological properties of these materials be better used in a wide range of contemporary industry products, it is necessary to establish a strict quality control. In this project, the goal is to purify, tudy the rheology, mineralogical characterize by quantitative analysis, modify and to investigate other characteristics of 20 Brazilian clays, usually marketed in raw form, to transform them into high purity products with strict quality control, in the forms hydrophilic (both those that swell as they do not swell in water) and hydrophobic (modified clay). As a result we expect to obtain in natura clays and organoclays from brazilian bentonites and kaolins, with quality and purity suitable for use in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and others products of high added value.
