Several authors suggest that Periodontal Disease is associated to Cardiovascular Disease and Atherosclerosis. Studies show that there is a biological plausibility and this should be better investigated. The aim of this study is to evaluate the possible relationship between periodontitis and atherosclerosis in patients who will pass through a vessel endarterectomy. This project pretends to correlate clinical periodontal condition with clinical vascular condition, and to evaluate the presence of periodontal pathogens in oral environment and atheroma plaque. To reach this purpose, the methodology will be clinical evaluation of periodontal condition; analysis of inflammatory markers; and microbiological analysis from saliva, subgingival plaque and atheroma samples. The population studied will be 100 patients that will have to pass throw a vessel endarterectomy, and that fit all the inclusion criteria established here. (AU)
