Nonsurgical treatment of destructive periodontal diseases is the reduction of bacterial deposits adhering to tooth surfaces by means of scaling and root planing. However, in some cases, conventional treatments may not be sufficient to control such diseases by interfering resistant periodontal pathogens and subsequent activation of chemical mediators of inflammatory response. The aim of this study is to assess the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) as an adjunctive treatment in patients with residual pockets of chronic periodontitis by means of evaluation of immunological parameters. Will be conducted a randomized clinical controlled double-blind parallel to evaluate 82 patients. Individuals with chronic periodontitis will be subjected to conventional periodontal treatment. After eight weeks, patients will be reassessed and sites with residual pockets with probing pocket depth (PPD) e 5mm are selected as experimental sites and divided into test and control groups randomly. The group will test the application of PDT and the control group receives a sham procedure. We will evaluate the levels of inflammatory mediators in gingival fluid: interleukins (IL-1², IL-6, IL-10) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-±). These parameters will be collected before the application of PDT, after one week, three and twelve months after treatment. During the monitoring period patients receive periodontal maintenance every 3 months, will also be made when the application of PDT. (AU)
