Abstract

Breast cancer affects women of developed and developing countries being the major cause of cancer death among Brazilian women, mainly in the range between 40 and 69 years. In Brazil, according our National Institute of Cancer, 49 240 new cases are expected in 2010, with an estimated risk of 49 cases per 100 000 women. The hormonal receptor expression and the histology of tumors are indications of how that disease will behave, but just reflect what intracellular genetic material determines. The great challenge is how to decipher what each tumor contains in their molecular microenvironment. However, the molecular mechanisms related to carcinogenesis have not yet been well elucidated. Within this context has emerged in recent years increasing interest in relating the development and progression of cancer to a class of molecules involved in cellular control: microRNAs. The research is to select thirty patients diagnosed with invasive ductal breast carcinoma with hormone receptors and HER 2 negative and thirty patients diagnosed with invasive ductal breast carcinoma with hormone receptors positive, HER 2 negative who underwent surgery at the Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina da USP. Paraffin specimens of these tumors will be dissected and their genetic material will be purified by extracting microRNA. The microRNA expression, by RT-PCR, will be related to oncological follow up of these patients in five years under the aspects: disease-free survival and overall survival. The results will be evaluated at national and internacional journeys and congresses and will be disseminated by publications in national and international periodics of international circulation.
