Quantitative-molecular genetic analysis for production traits, fatty acid profile and milk quality

Abstract

In search of increasing productivity and product quality, the animal breeding is able to identify animals with superior genetic values and adapted to the Brazilian conditions. With the contribution from the import of genetic material for use in the Brazilian dairy herds and the fact that the genetic gain for these traits has small magnitude, there is a perceived need for genetic evaluation of these animals under the national conditions of environment. Concomitantly, the milk yield with good quality traits such as the possible reduction in somatic cell count and increased contents of protein, fat and beneficial fatty acids are important objectives in dairy cattle breeding program. In this context, to maximize the potential genetic gains we can combine to the genetic evaluation the use of molecular markers as a tool to improve the selection and being the fatty acid profile an important component on human health, the purpose of this study represents an important research to livestock milk, allowing the genetic manipulation of these traits to raise the nutritional quality of milk. With the main objective of estimate genetic parameters related to production yield and milk quality, such as somatic cell counts and fatty acid profile, as well as the association of the polymorphisms of the SCD1, DGAT1, CXCR1 and TLR4 genes with these traits, besides to determine the correlation between the milk fat composition and the other components of this product. There will be monthly sampled about 2000 dairy cows in lactation and will be determinated the levels of fat, protein and the fatty acids butyric, lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, oleic, and conjugated linoleic besides production, somatic cell count and other milk components. The genetic-statistical model used will include the fixed effects of herd, calving season, year, class of days in milk, class of lactation and the random effect of animal besides the residual effect. For the polymorphisms study, there will be extracted DNA from the somatic cells present in milk samples and will be performed the genotyping of animals, in this case, the analysis will be added to the model the fixed effects of genotype of these genes.
